Action Mechanism

Naltima is one of the opioid antagonists, which works by blocking the effects of opioids and alcohol. It inhibits the feeling of high that one may experience when there are on alcohol or opiates. In addition, the drug prevents the desire of drinking alcohol and taking opioid painkillers. The exact mechanism in treating alcohol addiction is unknown, but it is presumed that has an action on the endogenous opioid system Opioid antagonists, including Naltima, have been found to decrease alcohol intake in animal and human studies.

Dosage

  • Take Naltima in the exact dosage and duration as recommended by your physician. Swallow the whole pill without chewing or crushing.
  • You can take Naltima tablets orally with or without food, but make sure you take it at the same time each day regularly, without missing or skipping the dose.
  • For the treatment of alcohol addiction, take Naltima 50 mg once a day, for up to 12 weeks, or as advised by your physician.
  • For the treatment of opioid addiction, you may initially have to take 25 mg, and later when you experience no withdrawal symptoms of opioids, you can take Naltima 50 mg once daily.
  • Naltima has been proven effective when given along with a comprehensive treatment plan that includes reassurance, psychological or behavioral therapy, and counseling.

Precautions

  • Before taking Naltima 50mg, make sure you tell your doctor about any drug allergies or medical conditions you have so you can use it safely.

Rarely, some people using Naltima may experience opiate withdrawal symptoms like abdominal pain, nervousness, restlessness, myalgia, and watery nose.

Warnings

  • Naltima could make you sleepy or dizzy. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid alcohol or cannabis (marijuana) during the course of therapy.
  • More importantly, avoid activities that need your attention during therapy, such as driving or using machinery, because naltrexone may cause drowsiness.
  • After you stop taking Naltima, you may become sensitive to even lower doses of opioid medications, which may eventually increase your risk of side effects from opioid drugs.
