Clomid – An Effective Infertility Drug

Description

Clomid is an infertility medication, especially used for women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It is actively composed of Clomiphene Citrate. Clomiphene, the active constituent of this medicine, was approved for medical use in 1967 in the US. The generic version of clomid is also available in the market.

It is a non-steroidal medication used for inducing ovulation in females suffering from a medical condition such as polycystic ovary syndrome. A woman with PCOS does not ovulate naturally. The use of clomid increases the chances of getting twins.

Clomiphene present in Clomid belongs to a family of drugs called selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). It is usually taken by mouth once in a day. The course of treatment usually lasts for five days. It is included in the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, which includes the most effective and safe medicines required in the healthcare system.

Action Mechanism

Clomiphene is a racemic mixture, consisting of 38% Zuclomiphene and 62% enclomiphene. Each of these components has unique pharmacological properties. Clomiphene has both estrogenic and anti-estrogenic property. The anti-estrogenic property of Clomid is supposed to induce ovulation in women.

The exact mechanism of action of Clomiphene is not clearly established. Clomiphene seems to stimulate the release of gonadotropins, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH), which is required for the development and maturation of the ovarian follicle, ovulation, and successive development and function of the corpus luteum, which results in pregnancy.
