Action Mechanism

Generic Periactin (Cyproheptadine) is the first-generation antihistamine drug. So, as the name suggests, it inhibits the secretion of histamine, a natural chemical that is overtly secreted during an allergic reaction. When your oversensitive immune system interacts with an allergen, your body produces more amount of histamine, a chemical that gives rise to allergy symptoms. Therefore, it is important to suppress histamine in order to get relief from allergy, which is what Generic Periactin does.

Dosage

Take Generic Periactin orally with or without food or as directed by your physician.
You might have to take this allergy medicine at least 2 to 3 times a day.
Make sure you take the whole tablet with water, without crushing, chewing, or splitting the pill.
The dosage is often based on your age, health condition, and the response to the treatment.
Do not increase or alter your dose or take it more often than advised.
Tell your physician if your allergy symptoms do not improve or get worsen even after taking Generic Periactin as recommended.

Precautions

Before taking Generic Periactin, tell your physician whether you have any medicinal allergies, including Cyproheptadine.

NOTE :These are common adverse effects of generic Periactin. If any of these adverse effects persist or aggravate, check with your physician right away. To relieve dry mouth, you can drink plenty of water. Tell your physician right away if you experience mood changes, tremor, difficulty urinating, pounding heartbeats, or shortness of breath.

Warnings

Generic Periactin can make you dizzy or drowsy. It can also cause blurry vision. So, do not drive, ride, use a machinery, or do things that need alertness or clear vision.
Special caution is advised in people with diabetes and liver disease. Check with your doctor about using this allergy medicine safely in people with liver disease or diabetes.
Older individuals may be more sensitive to this drug. They are more vulnerable to drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, confusion, and trouble urinating. And such side effects can increase the risk of falling. Therefore, it is recommended to take special precautions in elderly people.
During pregnancy, Generic Periactin should be used only when your physician indicates it. Also, ask about the risks and benefits of using this allergy medicine.
It is not clearly understood whether this allergy medication passes into breast milk. Ask your physician whether you can breast-feed while using this antihistamine drug.
