Description

Ocuflox eye drops is a formulation containing Ofloxacin as the active constituent. The active constituent, Ofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic and is prescribed for treating pneumonia, urinary tract infections, cellulitis, prostatitis, and certain types of infectious diarrhea. Ofloxacin is a patented drug molecule and is approved for medical use in 1985.

Ocuflox cannot be used in people suffering from a common cold, flu and other conditions caused by viruses. It is a schedule H drug and belongs to a class of medications called quinolones. An eye drop containing Ofloxacin is used for treating superficial eye infections caused by bacteria. Ocuflox is sterile, 0.3% ophthalmic solution. It is a fluorinated carboxyquinolone anti-microbial for topical ophthalmic use.

Action Mechanism

Ofloxacin present in Ocuflox eye drops is a quinolone/ fluoroquinolone antibiotic. The active constituent is bactericidal and thus its blocks DNA replication in bacteria by attaching itself to an enzyme called DNA gyrase, which permits the untwisting necessary for replication of one DNA double helix into two. Remarkably, Ocuflox has a greater affinity for bacterial DNA gyrase than that present in mammals.

This medication acts on the enzymes, DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which prevent human excessive super coiling of DNA during replication or transcription. Ofloxacin inhibits normal cell division by inhibiting the function of these enzymes.

Dosage

Before using Ocuflox read the instructions given on the prescription label carefully.
Use this product only as directed by the physician.
Thoroughly wash your hands with water before instilling these eye drops.
To prevent contamination, do not touch the tip of the dropper or let the dropper tip to touch your eyes.
For using Ocuflox, keep the dropper directly over the eyes and place one drop into each eye. Keep your eyes closed for one to two minutes.

Precautions

Before using these Ocuflox eye drops, inform your physician if you are allergic to its active component or other members of its drug class such as Ciprofloxacin or Levofloxacin.
Also, inform your doctor if you have a history of any other eye issues.
Avoid wearing contact less while using Ocuflox eye drops.
If you are using any other eye ointment or drops, keep a gap of at least five minutes.

Side Effects

This formulation can cause temporary stinging or burning sensation in the eyes for a few minutes after using it. Some of the commonly observed side effects of Ocuflox medication include

Temporary blurred vision
Discomfort in the eyes
Redness, itching of the eyes
Dryness of the eyes
Increased sensitivity to light, etc.

The above side effects are mild and they do not last for a long period. However, if any of these effects aggravate or worsen over time, immediately seek medical attention. A serious side effect is rarely observed with Ocuflox.

Warnings

The active medication present in these eye drops can produce unstable or blurred vision. So, avoid driving, using machinery or any activity that needs a clear vision until you are confident of performing these activities safely.
Ocuflox should not be used during pregnancy and breast-feeding without consulting your physician.
Avoid using medications containing escitalopram, quinidine, aspirin, ethinyl estradiol, corticosteroids, and anti-diabetic agents with these eye drops.
Complete a full course of treatment. Do not stop taking Ocuflox without consulting your doctor.
