Swimming can reduce asthma

Asthma can be fatal, if not controlled. It is a chronic inflammation of the bronchial tubes that results in swelling and narrowing of airways. It does not involve air sacs and affects only the bronchial tubes. However, there is no 100 % cure for this disease, though it disappears in some people with time, in others it aggravates with age. From alternative therapies, to modern age medicines, men have tried everything in their power to get rid of this disease. One thing that seems to have worked is swimming. There is no factual evidence to support this, but many swear by the fact that swimming helped them cope with asthma better.   Swimming to reduce asthma It has been observed that children who took swimming classes for 2 months showed a marked improvement in the clinical condition, including signs and symptoms, hospitalization and attendance at school as compared to their past history. The effects were present for almost a year after giving up the training.   Why swimming? Swimming has an edge over running and other forms of exercises as it does not cause any chest tightness that can lead to wheezing and difficulty in breathing. If people run in a cold and dry environment, it can increase the attacks of asthma. However, while swimming, the air is warm and moist due to which the intensity of asthma attacks are much less. This is one of the reasons as to why swimming causes fewer attacks than running.   There is a general myth that swimming causes asthma as it involves swimming in chlorinated water. Studies have also shown that the chlorinated water does not cause attacks of the asthma. Another independent research has shown that children who kept swimming for seven years or more reported a complete cessation of symptoms. Not only that, they could eat and drink cold food items and live a normal life like other children.
