Description

Generic Keppra is a prescription medicine that is often used in association with other medicines to treat the symptoms of seizures, or epilepsy. It contains a prescription drug called Levetiracetam, which belongs to the class of drugs called anticonvulsants. The drug may help reduce the frequency and number of seizure attacks you have.

Generic Keppra is advised as an adjunctive therapy for the treatment of partial onset seizures in adults with a history of epilepsy. It is also advised in association with other drugs for the treatment of myoclonic seizures in adults and people who are above 12 years of age with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. In addition, it is used for the treatment of primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures.

Action Mechanism

The precise mechanism by which Generic Keppra works to treat seizure, or epilepsy, is idiopathic. However, it is presumed that Levetiracetam binds to a synaptic vesicle glycoprotein and inhibits presynaptic calcium channels in order to reduce neurotransmitter release. It also acts as a neuromodulator. Simply put, it works on the certain neurotransmitters in the brain to impede impulse conduction across synapses, preventing the attacks of seizures.

Dosage

For adults, physicians often prescribe Generic Keppra 1000 mg once a day initially and then 500 mg twice a day.
Crushing, splitting or chewing the tablet may cause a bitter taste, so make sure you take a whole pill with a glass of water.

Older adults using Generic Keppra may be more sensitive to the side effects, especially dizziness, drowsiness, or loss of coordination. These adverse effects can increase the risk of falling.
