As per the latest studies, people who are more focused to their tasks are happy as compared to people whose minds drift while performing an activity.

A mind is always at work, either thinking of the past events, the present happenings or happily awaiting things to happen in the future. It’s always planning and plotting about the future or is busy evaluating a current event. However, this can hinder a persons output when the mind is busy thinking about something other than their current activity.

This observation has been made by some psychiatrists from America. As per the experts, human beings have an amazing capacity to keep the mind busy with mundane thoughts consisting of the past present and future and also build an imaginary word in the process where they think of things that have never occurred. This is believed to be wasting away of ones ability as human beings clumsily use their brain which not only decreases its capacity but is also the root cause of their unhappiness.
To further study this matter, there was a research conducted that involved more that 2,250 participants. These people were prompted at different times, throughout the span of 24 hours through an iPhone Web application and were questioned on their thoughts, feelings and at the same time were asked to categories their thoughts into pleasant, unpleasant and neutral.

The study revealed that the participants spent 47 % of their time in a wandering state. Due to this the experts concluded that mentally, people tend to spend a huge amount of time, living in the non- present. The imaginary world somehow overshadowed the present in certain cases. The most amusing observation was that only 10 % of people tend to suffer from wondering thoughts while making love, while the 90 % of them gave their 100 % to this task. They also said that they were happiest while making love, exercising conversing, resting, sleeping, working or using their lap tops.

The study also showed that

•    42.5 % had pleasant thoughts
•    26.5 % had unpleasant thoughts
•    31 % had neutral thoughts

It was also observed that people with pleasant thoughts were happier than people with unpleasant thoughts and those who had happy thoughts were less happy than people who were concentrating on their present tasks. Even before this research, scientist believed that in order to feel a sense of well-being and happiness, one needs to have a purpose in life. Therefore, it is important to concentrate on the task in hand rather than letting the mind wonder all over the place. This finding coincided with the age old philosophy that was advocated by self-help books and religious teachings of “living in the present”.
