Viagra, an effective drugs for impotency, due to its effective formulation of Sildenafil citrate, has earned another status in the field of medical industry. After being an effective agent for treatment of diseases such as, Erectile Dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension, it has now combined with doxorubicin to augment its efficacy.
Doxorubicin is a well known and efficient medicine for treatment of cancer, and the addition of Sildenafil citrate or Viagra has shown significant action in increasing the ability of the drug to cure tumor in prostate cancer. Studies also indicate that the combo bears substantial competency to truncate damages to heart.
Experts believe that doxorubicin, which has served as an anti-cancer drug for over four decades, may now stand as a more powerful drug to fight human cancer including prostate cancer. Researchers from Virginia Commonwealth University as well as VCU Massey Cancer Center adopted strict ‘In vivo’ as well ‘in vitro’ settings to conduct experiments, which denoted that Sildenafil citrate, generally referred to as Viagra, when combined with doxorubicin, significantly augments the production of reactive oxygen species. These reactive oxygen species are responsible for PCD or Program Cell Death also known as Apoptosis, in case of prostate cancer cells.
The observation also indicated that the combination of Viagra of Sildenafil citrate and doxorubicin has no negative influences on usual healthful prostate epithelial cells.
The principal investigator of the project, Mr. Rakesh C. Kukreja asserts,
We believe Sildenafil could be an excellent candidate for incorporation into cancer treatment protocols – with the potential of enhancing the anti-tumor efficacy, while protecting the heart against both short term and long term damage from doxorubicin.
In fact, Rakesh. C. Kukreja’s laboratory is amongst the initial labs to discover the concept of pre- conditioning. This pre- conditioning effect was designed in Mr. Kukreja’s laboratory by “pre-treating” mice during an in vivo experiment, with doses of Sildenafil citrate. The experiment indicated an increase in therapeutic ration of nitric oxide within the heart.
With another role in the medical industry, Viagra has become an important drug for medical science. Experts are still researching on various other projects with incorporated use of Sildenafil citrate.
