If you are frequently suffering from bouts of nausea, vomiting and difficulties while passing stool (be it constipation or diarrhea), double check the contents on your food plate. For all you know, they may be scarier than the Halloween night costumes. Unhygienic packaging, low nutritional values and misguided marketing strategies may dupe you into putting all kinds of wrong food items in your mouth. The results on your hair and skin may be bad enough to ensure you an entry in a Halloween party without the need of costume and make up. There are some food items which are outright scary for your system and hence it’s the best to avoid them.  Some of them are:

  • Packed lettuce- In the United States, between the year1990 to 2002, more than 11 % of food poisoning cases are caused by lettuce consumption (as reported by Center for Science in the Public Interest). Hence it is important that the lettuce is well rinsed before it is used of cooking or salad.  This helps to wash away the microbes and the pesticides.
  • Chicken- Chicken is a hot favorite with most people, but it may not be a good thing to put into your system. Recent study revealed that among 484 raw broilers, almost 48 % of them were infected with microorganisms, particularly harmful bacteria. These bacteria can cause food poisoning, indigestion, nausea, vomiting and decreases your immunity. The best it to avoid chicken as much as possible and if the craving is too much, then put it in an oven and bake till the thickest part reaches 180 degrees.
  • Eggs- Ok!! So scrambled eggs and omelets are so hard to do away with, especially since they are quick to make and good to eat, but eggs can be bad news for your body. Studies have shown that more that 660,000 cases of food poisoning are egg related. To avoid this from happening, it is best to check the eggs before buying them and store them in the fridge. It’s also important to wash your hands post cooking eggs.
  • Scallions- These innocent looking veggies have been responsible for various hepatitis A outbreaks. One should wash them well to remove all the dirt, store them in the refrigerator and before cooking, it’s the best to remove the outer layer.
  • Beef- Beef may not be a healthy option due to chances of poisoning from e.coli bacteria. E.coli is found in high number in natural beef, due to which people should opt for irradiated beef. Though the word ‘radioactive’ is not what we associate with when it comes to food, but it’s believed that induced radioactivity is 200,000 times smaller than the radioactivity present in the food. To decrease the risk of food poisoning from beef, one can follow these steps:
    • Add a tea spoon of oregano to a pound of minced beef as they effectively kill the bacteria.
    • If you are gorging on patties, ensure that they are flat so that the outside and the inside are evenly cooked and hence all the bacteria are killed.
