Despite that fact that obesity has been declared as an epidemic and a lot of print and paper is being used to increase awareness about this disease, there are many facts that need to be brought to light. People are still not sure if they are obese and how to curb this disorder.
Some of the most interesting facts of obesity are:
- Obesity in the second leading cause of death, the first being tobacco.
- Studies showed that obese men and women who were able to loose 10 % of their body weight experienced a significant improvement in their sexual lives.
- The manufacturers of child-safety seats are making bigger models. This was due to a report which said that more that 250,000 US children who were under the age of 6 were too fat to use them.

- Airlines are spending extra money counting in millions, on their fuel to accommodate the increasing weight of the passengers.

- In the same survey, 15 – 30 % of them preferred a broken marriage, not having children, getting depressed or turning alcoholic than becoming obese.
- An online survey revealed that more than 4000 people prefer giving up a year of their life than becoming obese.
- In the last decade, the average weight of the Americans has increased by 8.5 pounds.
- In 2004, the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) changed its estimation of the average weight of males from 170 to 184 pounds.
- Studies have shown that increased habit of eating out, and the fact that Americans have more cuisines to choose from, has affected their weight. Restaurant food accounts for 35 % of weight increase in the average Americans.
- The most common epidemic in children observed in the 21st century is obesity, with almost every country being equally affected.
- Studies show that obesity can also be the cause of chronic insomnia. Similarly, lack of sleep can cause obesity.
- Fat people also suffer from various psychological problems which stem from the fact that they have low self esteem, decrease confidence level and have a hard time in socializing or finding a soul mate.
- Obese people are most likely to suffer from chronic hair loss, erectile dysfunction and infertility.
- As per a report, in 2003, 21 % of the net New York City elementary students were suffering from obesity.
- As per reports, in the US, 70 % of people who received their health benefits are obese, with 20 % suffering from diabetes which can cause amputations, blindness, kidney and heart problems.
- People of normal weight have 15 % more chances of outliving people who are obese.
