Human relationships are a complicated matter altogether. Whoever hears about someone else’s extramarital affair wonders what and where did things go wrong. These are matters that are very personal and every marriage or intimate relationships have to work through them. These are not issue that you would want to share with outsiders. Impotence or sexual dysfunction leads to an unhappy sex life that becomes a common distress factor in relationships which lead to infidelity most often.
Infidelity
Infidelity is nothing but unfaithfulness to the intimate partner. It is also known as immorality when it occurs in a marriage. Infidelity can happen at both levels, the sexual level as well as on an emotional level. Sometimes it can also be a symptom of sex addiction or a low esteem of the self. It has been noted that though don’t approve of this marital infidelity, 15% of wives and 25% of men have engaged in sex and extramarital affairs at some point in their lives.
Impotence
Impotence is the inability to have proper sexual intercourse due to erectile dysfunction. Impotence may be a result of emotional or physical stress and chronic impotence affects at least 10% of the male US population. Impotence is highly detrimental to a marriage and romantic relationships though most of the impotency cases are diagnosable by seeing a physician and taking medications.
Relationships
Impotence can trigger major upheaval of emotions in both men and women alike. While men who are impotent often feel insecure and are complexed about their masculinity while the women tend to blame themselves and their imperfect bodies for leading their men to other women. They feel rejected, ugly and unloved.
Starting of infidelity
It is true that impotence can lead to infidelity not because it is the lack of sex between partners but due to the lack of communication between them. Men detach themselves from their partners in order not to discuss his inabilities verbally; it gets easier to attempt sexual pleasures outside to avoid embarrassment as home. Women whose husbands are impotent and do not seek medical advice will often try and reach out to other men to fulfill their sexual needs. Anger may also build up between the couple when impotence comes in-between their sexual pleasures. Even when the man is fit and able again, the residual anger may remain and damage the sex like and lead to infidelity even more.
Coping with infidelity and impotence
One should start by admitting impotence as the problem with the relationship. The following steps should go into identifying the physical and psychological health and try to understand impotence and ways to treat it. The partners involved need to tackle the problem together, in union and consultation on what can be the best way to treat it. Empathy is required to move ahead and not be selfish towards the other person. If infidelity is due to impotence, an open discussion and acceptance of the physical aspects can take the couple forward, with time and treatment, things are bound to get normal and a couple can once again enjoy a healthy relationship after having committed infidelity also.
