Colon cleansing is not something new for the masses as it has been a part of history and a part of various cultures and tradition.  This was due to the fact that religious teachers of that era were far more educated than the common man and ensured that the body underwent a complete cleansing besides the fact that it marked an important period in the religious calendars and helped them practice self control and come closer to almighty.

In the current times, doctors have also recognized and keep advocating colon cleansing to their patients. The British Medical Association states that “disease and death begin in your colons”. This means that high level of toxins in the colons can give rise to various ailments and some of them can be dangerous for the person, proving to be fatal, if the state is aggravated.

The process of colon cleansing has been a part of various religious practices due to which most people do it at least once in their life time. Almost every religion has been practicing this in one form or the other:

  • Lent- This is a part of traditions that is practiced by Christians and is kept from Ash Wednesday to Easter. This marks prayers, repentance and alms giving and at the same time, most Christians stick to a vegetarian diet and abstain from alcohol. Medically, this helps in cleansing the colon as animal fat has its own toxins that can remain in the body for a long time. Alcohol has also been known for its toxic and harmful effect. This act gives the body a chance to cleanse itself of the toxins and also helps Christians practice self control.
  • Ramadan- This is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and last for 29 or 30 days. During this phase, the participating Muslims do not have water, food or coition from dawn to sunset. Going without food and water for this long a time helps them practice self control. At the same time, it gives the body a break from the constant process of digesting food. With decreased pressure on colons, they are able to cleanse themselves and the body undergoes one of the most natural and rigid forms of colon cleansing. However, people who consume excess oily and fatty food may not get the required health benefits.
  • Fasting in Hindus- This Indian religion has fasting as an integral part of their practice. Also, since the religion has different practices that vary from region to region, fasting can be observed in many forms. From nil by mouth (no food of water) for more than 12 hours to having only fruits for nine days, there are many ways people fast. However, since most of it involves less spicy and natural forms of food, the body undergoes a natural detoxification process.
  • Zhai- This is a Chinese word that means fasting or vegetarian food. In Buddhism, removing fat diet from food twice a month on new moon days or six times a month is considered a form of fasting and is followed by various leaders.
