Morning sickness/pregnancy sickness/nausea gravidarum is a condition that more than 50 % of pregnant women go through. In some cases, it is also treated as one of the earliest signs of pregnancies and usually begins in the second month or 6th week of conception.
Cause of morning sickness- there is no exact medical evidence that can state the cause of morning sickness in women. However, some of the things that are related to morning sickness are:
- Hormones- pregnancy is marked by an increase in the level of estrogen
- Chemical changes in the body
- Women who are stressed and tired (fatigue) can also show the signs of morning sickness.
Symptoms of morning sickness- some symptoms of morning sickness such as mood swings and vomiting replicate that of other women who have been on hormonal replacement therapy. These symptoms are:
- Vomiting and nausea- these two symptoms mostly occur in the morning hours though no one really knows the reason behind it.
- Enhanced sense of smell- the olfactory nerve seems to go into an over drive and would-be-mother starts to have a strong sense of smell and taste. Also, the smell of food becomes repulsive and they vomiting on smelling anything that is being cooked.
- Acidity- an annoying and painful factor that accompanies pregnancy is acidity as the stomach starts to release excess of acids during the first trimester of pregnancy.
Tackle its right-
While expecting a child, it is best if the woman takes minimum allopathic drugs as it can have adverse effects on the fetus. Following certain DO’s and DONT’S that can help tackle the issues of morning sickness better.
- Keep having light meals that are easy to digest. This will ensure that the woman does not have an empty stomach for long. It can act as an acidity regulator and also helps to prevent nausea.
- Citrus fruits- the citric acid along with vitamin C helps to ensure that you do not feel nauseated or vomit.
- Since the sense of smell is at its peak during the first trimester, ensure that the person does not have to come across strong odors.
- Food- while eating avoid strong spicy, oily and acidic food as they can all trigger indigestion and in the process cause vomiting.
- Remain hydrated and drink plenty of water.
- Consult your doctor and start having prenatal vitamins.
- Rest well as the body is already under the stress of nurturing the fetus.
- Add some ginger and peppermint to the morning tea to decrease the chances of vomiting and nausea.
- Have banana when you feel nauseated. This fruits is a good source of energy, vitamins and minerals.
- Lemon- this is one of the most traditional treatments that has been use by pregnant women for centuries. Lemon has a tangy flavor and is a good source of vitamin C; both the factors help to decrease the chances of nausea and vomiting. In some cases, a slice of lime was heated directly over a flame and then sucked on to in order to drive away nausea.
