The hormones control some of the most vital functions of the body, starting from reproduction, growth, mood swings to immunity. When there is an imbalance of hormones, the body shows this in the form of disorders. This comes out in the form of erectile dysfunction, weight gain, weight loss, and hair loss skin. Some of the hormones that make us loose weight are-
- Adrenaline and cortisol- whenever the body experiences strong emotions, such as fright, anxiety or tension, the body produces both these hormones. In unison, these hormones control the “fight – or fight” when the person faces a dangerous situation. Together, both the hormones increase the heart and respiratory rate, get the muscle tensed, increase sensitivity of all the senses and provide exceptional concentration and focus.Under the current scenario, people are always stressed out and worried. Due to this stress, the body release excess of cortisol and adrenaline. Adrenaline does not remain for long in the circulation but the level of cortisol continues to be high.
This hormone gives out signals of the body being under fatigue due to which the body gets the wrong signal of being tired and out of energy. To reenergize, the body starts releasing digestive juices and the body feels hungry. Due to the hunger pangs, the person starts feasting on food that is rich in carbohydrates and fats. The overload of calories causes weight gain and the person ends up being stress about the body weight.
This starts a vicious cycle where the person gets stressed and eats more. The most dangerous part of the adrenaline- cortisol combination is that it causes toxic weight gain around the stomach. This can be attributed to the fact that abdominal fat have an affinity to cortisol leading to accumulation of fat cells in that area. To keep the weight in check, it’s important to de-stress. As the stress level goes down, the level of cortisol also declines due to which, the temptation to keep eating all the time goes down and the person is able to control his weight.
- Thyroid hormones- sudden loss of weight despite having a good diet can be due to hyperthyroidism. During this disordered the person experiences an increase in the heart rate and the basal metabolic rate (BMR) also goes up. Due to this the person is hyperactive. The body tends to burn fat faster so the person looses flesh despite eating well.
- Testosterones- besides being a reproductive hormone, this hormone also helps in weight loss. If there is a balanced level of testosterones in the circulation, the body tends to have an increased basal metabolic rate and burns off calories more easily. It also ensures that the person does not unnecessarily fell hungry and hence does not pile on calories.
- Estrogen- decrease or increase in the level of this hormone can affect the weight of the person. When the level of estrogen is correct in the body, the body does not start accumulating extra calories. Also excess of this hormone causes water retention leading to weight gain.
