In the recent times, hair loss is giving sleepless night to many individuals as they all battle this disorder. For doctors, this has proved to be a gold mine, as the number of patient with hair loss disorder increase everyday. Millions of dollars are being spent in clinical trials across the world in trying to figure out a solution to these problems. There are some drugs in the market and they have all shown various levels of efficacy.
- Minoxodil- In hair fall therapy, this is a leading drug and is marketed in different countries under various brand names with one of the most popular being Rogaine. This drug had been in the market since 1988 and 8 years later, in 1996, it got the approval to be sold as an over the counter drug. The efficacy of the drug has varied in individuals. While 25% of the men reported regrowth of hair, the percentage of women who benefited was a little less, at 20%. Later, a more concentrated version of this drug was released which showed 45 % better efficacy than the previous drug. But this stronger version is not advised for use in women. The cost for a year’s treatment is reasonable, but the only drawback is that, this drug has to be continued for life. On discontinuation, the effect of the drug is reversed. This drug comes in a cream form and is far more effective in retaining the present hair than regrowing it. This is one of the reasons why some men and women use it to arrest hair fall, rather than to regrow it.
- Finasteride- In 1997, a year after monoxodil gained approval, finasteride, another hair loss drug gained approval. Marketed as propecia, this was the first drug to get approved for treatment of pattern baldness which came in the form of a pill. Patients have to take one pill a day continuously for several months to see some positive results. The success rate varies and there are patients who have taken the pill for more than 12 months and still dint observe any results. These patients are usually advised to discontinue the treatment. Studies done in clinical trials show that 80 % of men who are on finasteride have shown decreased hair loss while 60 % have shown new hair growth. This drug is contracted in women as it interferes with their fertility. Women who have taken the drug in any form have given birth to babies with defects in male fetuses.
- Revivogen- This is one of the latest drugs to hit the market. It contains DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) inhibitor and also acts as a stimulant. This can be safely used by men and women.
- Folliderm- This is the brand name of a multi-vitamin which helps to improve scalp and follicle health and vitality.
- Tricomin- This is again a new drug with copper peptide as an active ingredient which acts as DHT inhibitor and reverses the damaging effect.
- Tricomin- This works best in combination with Rogaine and Propecia and helps to stimulate the hair follicles to grow again.
All the above mentioned products vary in efficacy and are still being proven, though some have shown encouraging results.
