Eczema is one of the most common chronic skin disorders that are marked by scaly and itchy skin. Some of the most common type of eczema is:
- Atopic eczema- This is more common on the neck, ears and torso of the body
- Contact dermatitis- This occurs due to irritation of the skin and can occur due to irritants like soap, sweat, saliva and urine
- Varicose eczema- This is more common in old people and affects the lowest part of the legs making the skin inflamed and itchy.
- Hand eczema- This commonly affects the hand and is caused by fungal infections. It can also be seen on the legs and chest.
- Asteatotic eczema- The skin cracks due to lack of moisture
- Stasis dermatitis- This can occur in the calves, ankles and feet in people who are already suffering from varicose veins.
The most common in all these types is the atopic eczema which has symptoms that resemble allergy. The only difference is that these symptoms last for a longer time. This disorder is more common in children, particularly babies but resolves as they grow up. Doctors have also observed that these symptoms are associated with asthma and hay fever.
Some of the factors that can lead to Atopic eczema are:
- Allergy to pollen grain, dust mites and molds.
- Sudden attack of cold of flu.
- Contact of skin against rough surface.
- Exposure of irritants in the environment.
- Sudden exposure to extreme cold or heat.
- Reaction to chemical found in cosmetics such as perfumes, dyes, skin lotions and soaps.
Signs and symptoms-
- Atopic eczema is characterized by oozing and crusting
- Bloody or non-bloody discharge from ears
- Severe scratching causing rawness of skin
- Discoloration of the skin making it extremely dark of fair
- Skin appears thick and leather like
