Sudden cramps or pain in the legs could be due to low potassium levels. Potassium is a salt that plays a major role with the human nervous system, functioning of muscles, release of hormones and helps in keeping the heart and kidney healthy.

 

Benefits of potassium-

  • Emotional well being- It has a direct effect on the nervous system so the correct amount of potassium is important for the mental well being of a person. Potassium is excellent for anxiety, stress and irritability.
  • Physical well being- Studies have shown that a decrease in the level of potassium can affect the muscular strength of the person.
  • Decreases- the chances of suffering from hypertension.
  • Decrease- in its level can cause hypoglycemia.
  • Decrease- can also cause weakness, fatigue, confusion, heart irregularities and affects the muscles co-ordination.

People who have a balanced diet daily comprising of fruits and vegetables and decreased amount of sodium are able to meet the daily requirement for potassium. A decrease in the level of sodium can occur due to excess loss of fluids from perspiration, upset stomach and use of laxatives and diuretics. This is more common in people who are into yo- yo dieting or workout on a daily basis. However, excess of potassium in diet can also be harmful especially for people who are suffering from diabetes and kidney failures.

 

However, consuming certain food items can ensure that the person does not suffer from deficiency of potassium. Some of them are :

 

  • Meat, chicken, turkey and fish are good sources of potassium
  • Banana- this fruit is known for the fact that it is rich in sodium.
  • Fresh Apricots- unlike the canned ones, fresh apricots are a brilliant source of potassium.
  • Veggies like lima beans, potatoes, vegetables juice and tomatoes are rich in potassium.
  • Dairy products such as cheese and milk are also good source of potassium
